New Rail Alphabet by A2 Type
Working closely with Polly Braden, we designed this book as part of her commission by Multistory, an arts organisation based in West Bromwich, aiming to bring visual artists in touch with the local community.
Together with Sally William's writing Braden's photographs tell the stories of 10 individuals, some with learning disabilities, some with autism or both. With sometimes painful detail they show us how they cope with their daily lives, how their histories have shaped them and last but not least how a few organisations help them towards a better future.
In order to make this publication accessible to the people at the heart of it, we followed easy-to-read guidelines issued by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, combining it with the New Rail Alphabet by A2 Type, a revival of the British Rail alphabet originally designed for the signage of British Hospitals, Railway Stations and Airports.
The book is published by Dewi Lewis Publishing and will be launched on the occasion of the pairing exhibition at MAC Birmingham, opening on 8 September 2018.
